Star Anise Seeds. Native to China, star anise comes from a small evergreen tree. It is powerful and liquorice-like, with a more pungent, stronger & more sophisticated flavour than regular Anise. The dried fruits contain essential oil, which is dominated by anethole which gives the spice its flavour. It is used in mulled wine, desserts and liqueurs (e.g. Pernod, Anisette, Pastis, Ouzo etc.) Star Anise is a star-shaped, dark brown pod that contains a pea-sized seed in each of its eight segments. It is warm, sweet, and aromatic. |
